Hello, I'm Angie Jones Smith a lifelong resident and proud third-generation resident of Cocoa’s vibrant District 1 and the Diamond Square community. My family’s roots in this neighborhood span more than 80 years, and my lifelong connection to District 1 has shaped my deep commitment and love for serving the people who call Cocoa home.

For the past 2 years, I have been serving as a board member on the Diamond Square Redevelopment Agency (CRA) for the city of Cocoa, serving in the same seat my father served on for almost 30 years. I currently serve as the Vice-Chair on the board.

I am running for Cocoa City Council to provide strong, responsible leadership, protect the legacy of District 1, and help build a safer, stronger future for our families, seniors, and young people. I understand the needs of our seniors, families, and neighborhoods.

I'm stepping forward to serve on the Cocoa City Council not for recognition, but to provide strong, dynamic leadership, protect our legacy, and help build a safer, brighter future for the city of Cocoa District 1. As an educator and community leader, I’ve dedicated my life to serving others and helping our community grow stronger together. I’m running for City Council to bring experienced, thoughtful leadership that puts people first and focuses on real results for our neighborhoods.

RAISED IN THE CITY OF COCOA, DISTRICT 1

I was raised in the city of Cocoa District 1, where my family has lived for generations.

My mother, Jo Ann Robinson Jones, was born in Cocoa Distract 1 on Magnolia Street (now Stone Street) 80 years ago after my grandparents relocated to Cocoa in the late 1930s. Like many families who helped shape the Diamond Square community, they worked hard to build a neighborhood known for pride, strength, and unity. The family home sat at the corner of Stone Street and Fiske Boulevard, where Wawa is located today.

My dad, Ed Jones, made Cocoa District 1 his home after moving to Cocoa in the early 1960s. He founded Afro City Barber Shop more than 60 years ago, a business that was the starting point for many barbers in Florida and continues to serve the community today on West King Street in Cocoa District 1.

Through their example, I learned the values of hard work, faith, education, love of community and giving back to the community.

Me and my siblings, Edwin "Fuzzy" Jones, Erik Jones, Elvin "Pop" Jones and Sammy Parker, were raised in Virginia Park, where her parents still live today.

Growing up in Cocoa District 1 taught me the importance of respecting my elders, supporting my neighbors, encouraging the youth, empowering young people and making sure every voice in our community is heard.

Education and Career

I attended Saturn Elementary School, Poinsett Middle School, and I'm a proud graduate of Cocoa High School, Class of 1988.

I earned my Associate of Arts degree from Brevard Community College, Cocoa campus (now Eastern Florida State College), and my Bachelor of Science from the University of Central Florida, and my Master of Science in Educational Leadership with a specialization in Enrollment Management from Capella University.

I've worked professionally as an educator in the higher education student affairs arena for 32 years. My professional journey has included working at BCC (EFSC), Rollins College and for the past 23 years at UCF. My career has been dedicated to helping students, families, and communities succeed, and I bring that same passion for service to my work in the community.

I am a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated for 23 years.

I am currently involved in several professional organizations including, the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA), NASPA Student Affairs Professional Association and ACE Leadership Network of Florida.  In addition to Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, my other civic organization memberships include Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, NAACP, and League of Women Voters.

Family and Commitment to Community

My husband, Felton, and I returned home to Cocoa in 2016 after living in Orlando for one year, because the city of Cocoa, specifically District 1, is where our hearts are.

We are the very proud parents of Jeremy, Mercedes, Shari, and Cara, and grandparents to Ma’Kayla, Vari, and Kiela.

For me, Cocoa District 1 is more than a place on the map, it is home. It is where I was raised, where I raised my family, and where my immediate and extended family built their lives, and where I am committed to helping the next generation thrive.
